Rating: ★★★

"Just One Friend" is a thought provoking novella. It takes a look at the importance of having people around you that you can trust and call friend. It takes the reader to a world where people are allowed one friend for life. Women are used as entertainment and constantly under scrutiny by those of higher power. Any mistakes are viewed as punishable offenses leading to banishment or death. I enjoyed the structure of the story, but would have enjoyed a little more background on how this world and its rules came to be.
Shaw is an excellent writer and the story is very unique. The action is non-stop from the very first page to the very last. There are some heartbreaking moments where you may need a tissue or two. The overall story is entertaining, but as I stated, having a bit more background information and character development to help the reader bond with the protagonist in a more realistic manner would have made this novella even better. I would happily recommend this novella to any dystopian genre fan who is looking for a unique story that is action packed and a quick easy read.
